Depeche Mode are one of the most enduring and successful bands to have emerged during the new wave and new romantic era of the 1980s. The group have notched up 45 songs in the UK singles chart and have scored number one albums in the UK, US and throughout Europe. It is estimated that they have sold over 75 million albums worldwide, with total record sales (including singles) topping 100 million worldwide.
The original line-up was Dave Gahan, Martin L. Gore, Andy Fletcher and Vince Clarke. Clarke left in December 1981 and later went on to form Yazoo, The Assembly and, most successfully, Erasure.
The band's previous album, Playing the Angel, topped the album charts in 18 countries in 2005 and the subsequent tour saw them play to 2.5 million fans across the world. Following the release of their twelfth album, Sounds of the Universe, the band embarked on their first-ever European stadium tour. The tour will see them performing some of their greatest hits and will visit the LG Arena Birmingham, MEN Arena Manchester, SECC, Glasgow and The O2 London in December 2009.
